Background of the Study: Organ transplantation is a life-saving procedure for individuals with end-stage organ failure, but it brings about significant psychological challenges for recipients. Many transplant recipients experience a range of emotional responses, including anxiety, depression, and fear of rejection, especially during the post-transplant period (Ibrahim et al., 2023). Psychological well-being is crucial for recovery, as emotional distress can negatively impact adherence to medication and overall health outcomes (Alhassan et al., 2024). Nurses, through their roles in providing counseling and emotional support, are uniquely positioned to address these psychological concerns. Nurse-led counseling has been shown to improve the emotional state and quality of life of patients in various healthcare settings, particularly for transplant recipients (Akinmoladun et al., 2024).

In Yobe State, where organ transplantation is less common and healthcare infrastructure may be limited, understanding the impact of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of transplant recipients is vital. This study will explore how nurses’ counseling interventions can alleviate emotional distress and improve psychological well-being for post-transplant patients.

Statement of the Problem: Organ transplant recipients often face significant psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, and adjustment disorders, which can adversely affect their recovery process (Olawale & Suleiman, 2023). Despite the importance of psychological care in improving post-transplant outcomes, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling in enhancing the mental health of transplant recipients in Yobe State. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of organ transplant recipients in the region and identify ways to optimize these interventions.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of organ transplant recipients in Yobe State hospitals.
  2. To identify the specific psychological challenges faced by organ transplant recipients in Yobe State.
  3. To assess how counseling interventions by nurses can improve emotional adjustment and quality of life for transplant recipients.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the impact of nurse-led counseling on the psychological well-being of organ transplant recipients in Yobe State hospitals?
  2. What are the specific psychological challenges faced by organ transplant recipients in Yobe State?
  3. How do nurse-led counseling interventions affect emotional adjustment and the quality of life of transplant recipients?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led counseling significantly improves the psychological well-being of organ transplant recipients in Yobe State hospitals.
  2. Organ transplant recipients who receive nurse-led counseling show higher levels of emotional adjustment and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression.
  3. The presence of psychological support through counseling is positively correlated with improved post-transplant health outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on transplant recipients in Yobe State hospitals and evaluate the effect of nurse-led counseling on their psychological well-being. Limitations include the possibility of self-report bias and challenges in generalizing the findings due to the small sample size in the region.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Nurse-led counseling: Emotional support and psychological counseling provided by trained nurses to patients.
  • Psychological well-being: The mental health status of individuals, including emotional and psychological stability, free from disorders such as depression and anxiety.
  • Organ transplant recipients: Patients who have undergone organ transplantation procedures.
